Ever catch yourself being your own harshest critic?
You're not alone. This week, we're diving into a topic that hits close to home for many of us self-love and the struggle against self-criticism.
I'm sharing my personal journey and some hard earned wisdom that might just change how you talk to yourself.
We're about to get real about being kinder to the person you see in the mirror.
You're Not Your Own Enemy
"You are way too hard on yourself."
This is something my loved ones would often tell me.
At first I'd hated hearing it, but deep down, I knew they were right.
So when was the last time you were kind to yourself?
It's a simple question, but the answer can be revealing.
For me, being hard on myself has been an ongoing battle.
I've struggled to surrender the habit of tough self-criticism, comparing myself to others, thinking I could have done better, should have done better, should be at a certain point in my life by now.
The Heart of the Matter
I've realised that when we beat ourselves up over small things, it starts to become a habit.
And that habit? It turns us into our own worst enemy.
I was that own worst enemy.
The constant beating myself down led me to start thinking that the world was also beating me down.
But here's the truth, when you're burying yourself in criticism, you're just digging your own grave.
The world can already be tough enough as it is.
If we're constantly putting ourselves down while the world is doing the same, we're just making things harder for ourselves.
Your Toolkit for Change
Become aware of your self-talk and take control of it.
Practice saying "I love you" to yourself in the mirror daily.
Write down who you want to be and what that person does. Practice it daily.
Document how you feel now and reflect on changes over time.
Making It Personal
I totally get it, sometimes it's not easy to be kind to yourself, especially when we have high standards that we set for ourselves or when life throws curveballs.
But the real question is, how do we learn from these experiences instead of letting them defeat us?
Let me ask you this.
Have you ever felt uncomfortable in your own skin?
For me, I used to hate the way I felt in clothes, the way I showed up, how I would act.
But then I realised that in order for me to change, I had to firstly understand what was going on.
I asked myself, For the person I want to become, what would I have to do in order to feel like that?
What has helped me overcome this was changing the way I spoke to myself.
Loving me every step of the way has led to me building momentum.
It wasn't easy, but it was worth it.
Now, I'd like you to reflect.
What's been your journey with self-love?
What challenges have you faced, and how are you working to overcome them?
Why This Matters to You
All these self-critical thoughts are the biggest waste of time.
They don't serve us; they only hold us back.
Don't lock yourself away.
The world has so much to offer when you become aware of what's out there.
Step out, face your fears, and be kind to yourself in the process.
Your Next Steps
Now it's your time to take control, take accountability, be kind to yourself, and most importantly, love yourself.
It's time to break free from the chains of self-criticism.
It's time to embrace self-love and growth.
You deserve it, and you're capable of it.
Trust me, I've been there and the view from the other side?
It's beautiful.
This Week's Self-Love Challenge
I challenge you to practice one act of self-love every day this week.
It could be as simple as giving yourself a compliment, or saying no to something that doesn't serve you.
Keep track of how these small acts impact your mood and outlook.
Remember, self-love is a journey, not a destination.
Be patient with yourself and celebrate every small step forward.
Wrapping Up
Thanks for being you, thank you for showing up.
You are special.
You deserve love, especially from yourself.
Stop holding yourself back, stop digging your grave.
Go and see the world for what it truly has to offer.
Deep down, you love yourself too.
You've got this!
Until next Sunday, Justin
💡Your self talk shapes your reality. When you change how you speak to yourself, you change your world.
